Concussion
Testing
There are two types of Concussion Testing
Baseline Testing
Baseline testing is a pre-injury set of tests done when someone is healthy. It measures how your brain normally functions (memory, reaction time, balance, etc.). If you later get a concussion, doctors compare your post-injury scores to your own personal baseline instead of just to “average” scores. This makes diagnosis and return-to-play/school/work decisions much more accurate.
It’s most common for:
-
High-school, college, and professional athletes (especially contact/collision sports)
-
Military personnel
-
Some pediatric practices and neurology/concussion clinics
Event Testing
This is what happens at the event (game, practice, tournament, race, etc.) when someone takes a hit to the head or body and a concussion is suspected.
Purpose of Event Testing
-
Quickly spot a possible concussion
-
Decide: Remove from play NOW vs. “monitor”
-
Compare baseline if a "pre-season baseline Test" exists
